In 2018, Uttar Pradesh witnessed a pivotal administrative reshuffle when Shishir Singh, a 1997 batch PCS officer, took charge as the Director of the Information Department. Known for his honesty and dynamism, Singh’s appointment was a testament to his exceptional capabilities and unwavering dedication to public service. His elevation to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) rank was due in 2019, underscoring the trust and confidence placed in him by the state government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Shishir Singh’s close association with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made him a pivotal figure in the state’s administrative machinery. Adityanath’s full faith in Singh’s abilities has not only enabled the successful execution of critical state projects but also stirred internal jealousy among some bureaucrats. Despite this, Singh remains steadfast, focusing on his responsibilities with a clear sense of purpose and integrity. His educational journey, which includes studying at the prestigious Boys’ High School in Allahabad, the same institution where legendary cine star Amitabh Bachchan received his early education, reflects a foundation of discipline and excellence.
As the Director of the Information Department, Shishir Singh has been instrumental in managing and promoting several landmark events in Uttar Pradesh. From the grand Ayodhya Mandir Celebrations to the colossal Kumbh Mela, and the Investor Summit aimed at boosting the state’s economic landscape, Singh’s leadership has been a cornerstone of success. His ability to handle such high-profile events with precision and grace speaks volumes about his strategic acumen and patience. Singh’s role in giving shape to mega projects highlights his capability as a bold decision-maker and an effective administrator.
Shishir Singh’s tenure has been marked by significant reforms in the Information Department. One of his notable achievements is the removal of fake journalists from the advertisement list, a bold move that reinforced the department’s credibility. By ensuring that only legitimate media professionals were recognized, Singh has strengthened the department’s integrity and aligned it with the principles of transparency and accountability. This action further cemented his reputation as a bureaucrat who prioritizes the public good over personal or political gain.
Despite the pressures of his role, Shishir Singh remains soft-spoken and composed, embodying the qualities of patience and resilience. His ability to navigate complex administrative landscapes while maintaining a calm demeanor has earned him respect across various levels of governance. The corridors of power in Uttar Pradesh often echo with discussions of Singh’s pivotal role in the state administration. Many regard him as the “right arm” of Yogi Adityanath, a testament to the Chief Minister’s reliance on his expertise and judgment.
In 2018, during an administrative reshuffle, Singh replaced Ujjwal Kumar as the Director of Information. Ujjwal Kumar, who was subsequently posted as the Municipal Commissioner of Allahabad (now Prayagraj), left behind a significant legacy. Singh’s appointment marked a new chapter for the department, bringing with it a wave of reforms and innovations under his guidance.
Shishir Singh stands as a symbol of honesty, diligence, and transformative leadership. His contributions to the state’s Information Department and his unwavering commitment to public service continue to shape Uttar Pradesh’s administrative landscape. As a trusted ally of Yogi Adityanath, Singh’s legacy as a bold and dynamic bureaucrat is one of inspiration and impact.
