Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement had once again dismantled the myth of Israeli military invincibility. On Wednesday night, Araghchi took to his X account to highlight Hezbollah’s achievements, referencing the 2006 war in which the movement successfully repelled an Israeli invasion. “Hezbollah once again shattered the myth of Israel’s invincibility,” he wrote, following reports of Israel being forced to agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah after sustaining heavy casualties in southern Lebanon.
Araghchi’s comments come after intense clashes between Hezbollah forces and the Israeli military in southern Lebanon. The ceasefire agreement, reached earlier this week, was interpreted by Iran’s chief diplomat as a significant setback for Israel. Araghchi accused Israel of “pleading for a ceasefire” after suffering considerable losses during the confrontation.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also turned his attention to Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, urging the Tel Aviv regime to accept defeat. Since the beginning of the conflict in October last year, Araghchi claimed, Israel has struggled to achieve its objectives despite substantial support from the United States. “It is high time for Israel to accept defeat in Gaza too,” he stated, reiterating Tehran’s stance against the continued aggression.
The Biden administration has faced criticism from Iran for its military and political support for Israel. Over the past year, Washington has reportedly provided around $18 billion in military aid to Israel while vetoing UN Security Council resolutions calling for an immediate end to hostilities in Gaza. Adding to the tensions, the International Criminal Court (ICC) last week issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the country’s recently dismissed war minister, Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Araghchi condemned the ongoing violence, accusing Netanyahu of exploiting American taxpayer funds to sustain what he described as Israel’s campaign of war crimes. “Over the past year, Netanyahu has milked US taxpayers of tens of billions of dollars to fund his war crimes, all while enjoying full US military support and political cover,” Araghchi wrote.
The war on Gaza has drawn widespread condemnation for its devastating human cost. Following the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, the conflict has escalated, leading to a humanitarian catastrophe. Reports indicate that over 44,000 people, predominantly women and children, have been killed, with more than 100,000 injured. The scale of destruction has shocked the international community, intensifying calls for an immediate cessation of violence.
Araghchi’s statements reflect Iran’s firm opposition to Israeli policies and its support for Palestinian resistance movements. While tensions remain high, the international spotlight is increasingly focused on achieving a durable resolution to the ongoing conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza. The unfolding developments underscore the urgent need for diplomatic intervention and humanitarian relief to address the crises in the region.
