The Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to India, His Excellency Meshal Mustafa Al-Shamali recently joined hands with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, senior government officials, and a distinguished delegation of ambassadors and diplomatic corps from Arab and international nations. Together, they participated in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony, a powerful gesture toward environmental conservation. Organized at the invitation of Delhi’s Minister of Industries, Food and Supplies, and Minister of Environment, Forests, and Wildlife, the event unfolded within the serene gardens of the Indian presidential palace, Rashtrapati Bhavan. This gathering was a highlight of “Van Mahotsav 2025,” India’s month-long Festival of Trees, celebrating the vital role of trees in sustaining life and agriculture.

Ambassador Al-Shamali’s act of planting a tree in a designated spot was more than ceremonial; it embodied a shared commitment to combating climate change and fostering sustainability. The event aligned with India’s ambitious “One Tree in the Name of Mother” campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day, June 5, 2024. This nationwide initiative calls on every citizen to plant a tree as a tribute to motherhood and the nurturing essence of nature, reinforcing the deep cultural and ecological significance of trees in India.
“Van Mahotsav,” an annual tradition since 1950, has evolved into a powerful platform for raising awareness about environmental stewardship. This year’s celebration, marked by the participation of global diplomats, underscored the universal urgency of addressing climate challenges. Trees, as nature’s silent warriors, absorb carbon dioxide, purify the air, and provide shade and sustenance. In a world grappling with rising temperatures and deforestation, such initiatives remind us that collective action, even in small steps, can yield monumental impact.
The presence of Ambassador Al-Shamali and other international representatives highlighted the role of diplomacy in environmental advocacy. Kuwait, a nation acutely aware of climate vulnerabilities in the Gulf region, shares India’s vision for a sustainable future. The ambassador’s participation symbolized the strengthening of bilateral ties between Kuwait and India, rooted in mutual respect for environmental and cultural values. As Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized, such collaborative efforts amplify the message of unity in preserving our planet for future generations. The “One Tree in the Name of Mother” campaign resonates deeply in a country where nature is revered as a life-giving force.
By encouraging citizens to plant trees, Prime Minister Modi has sparked a movement that transcends borders, inspiring global participation. The involvement of diplomats from diverse nations at the ceremony reflects a shared recognition that climate change is a global challenge requiring collective responsibility. This tree-planting ceremony was a poignant reminder that every sapling planted is a step toward a healthier planet. It calls on individuals, communities, and nations to act with purpose and urgency. As Ambassador Al-Shamali and his counterparts dug into the soil of New Delhi, they planted not just trees but seeds of hope, collaboration, and a greener tomorrow.
