The Sultanate of Oman took part in the 15th session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM), convened at the UN headquarters in New York, USA. The Omani delegation was led by the Acting Chairman of the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority at the Ministry of Defence, reflecting the nation’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in geospatial information management.

The high-level meeting brought together experts and representatives from across the globe to deliberate on the effective governance, integration, and application of geospatial data in support of sustainable development and global policy objectives. Among the key topics discussed were enhancing governance frameworks, the strategic role of regional committees in advancing the global geospatial agenda, and the contributions of thematic networks in developing coordinated initiatives. Participants also explored strategies for the future evolution of geospatial information ecosystems in light of emerging needs and technologies.

A central focus of the session was the United Nations Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (IGIF), which provides guidance for countries to strengthen their national geospatial capabilities. Other significant agenda items included the Global Geodetic Reference Frame (GGRF), a critical foundation for precise positioning and mapping—and the application of geospatial data in tackling pressing challenges such as climate change, environmental conservation, and disaster risk management.

Delegates examined legal and policy frameworks governing the use of geospatial data, the management of reference datasets, and the adoption of emerging technologies to enhance data collection, analysis, and dissemination. The discussions also covered the implementation of global geospatial standards, which are essential for ensuring interoperability and consistency in data use across borders.

In addition, the session reviewed the contributions of UN Global Geospatial Information Management Centers operating outside UN headquarters, which play a pivotal role in supporting countries to improve their geospatial governance systems and capabilities. These centers facilitate technical assistance, training, and the sharing of best practices to strengthen the global geospatial community.

Organized in line with the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, the session served as a vital platform for nations to exchange experiences, align strategies, and advance the shared vision of a robust and integrated global geospatial information system. Oman’s active participation underscores its dedication to leveraging geospatial innovation for sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and improved decision-making at both national and global levels.
