The Sultanate of Oman has officially welcomed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent announcement regarding the United Kingdom’s intent to recognize the State of Palestine. The declaration is expected to be made at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session, marking a potentially historic moment in international diplomacy and Middle Eastern affairs.

In a statement released today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oman expressed strong support for the UK’s decision and reiterated its long-standing position on the Palestinian cause. The Sultanate emphasized that recognition of the State of Palestine is not only a moral and legal responsibility but also a vital step toward ensuring justice and peace in the region.

The Omani Foreign Ministry called on countries around the world that have yet to recognize Palestine to follow the UK’s lead. “It is crucial for the international community to uphold the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state,” the statement read. Oman reaffirmed that such a state must be based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital — a stance in line with United Nations resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The Sultanate highlighted that meaningful recognition of Palestinian statehood would contribute to the revival of a two-state solution, which remains the only viable path toward achieving a just and comprehensive peace between Palestinians and Israelis. Oman further warned that continued inaction and silence on the issue only serve to prolong conflict and suffering.

Oman’s statement comes at a time of renewed international focus on the Israel-Palestine conflict, as global powers reassess their policies in light of prolonged hostilities and stalled peace negotiations. By endorsing Britain’s move, Oman has positioned itself as a consistent advocate for Palestinian self-determination and a key player in promoting regional stability.

As the world awaits the developments at the UN General Assembly, the Sultanate’s appeal serves as a diplomatic reminder that international solidarity and political recognition are essential to realizing the long-overdue aspirations of the Palestinian people. Oman’s call is likely to add momentum to a growing chorus of voices urging tangible progress toward a just resolution and sustainable peace in the Middle East.
