Qatar participated in the 27th meeting of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, held in Kuwait on October 23. The Qatari delegation was headed by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

The high-level meeting brought together environment ministers from all GCC member states to deliberate on pressing environmental challenges facing the region and explore unified strategies to enhance sustainability and climate resilience. The ministers underscored the importance of regional cooperation and coordination to ensure the effective implementation of environmental initiatives in line with the GCC’s shared vision for sustainable development.

During the session, the participants discussed a range of critical topics, with a particular focus on strengthening Gulf environmental cooperation, addressing transboundary environmental challenges, and promoting the implementation of joint projects and strategies. They reviewed progress on key regional initiatives related to biodiversity preservation, waste management, climate change adaptation, and pollution control.

The meeting also highlighted the role of the Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) in safeguarding the marine ecosystems of the Arabian Gulf. A visual presentation showcased ROPME’s significant programmes and projects, including ongoing efforts to combat marine pollution, monitor coastal degradation, and support sustainable marine resource management.

In his remarks, HE Dr. Al Subaie reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to supporting collective GCC efforts aimed at advancing environmental protection and climate action. He emphasized the need for integrating modern technologies and innovative practices in addressing environmental challenges, particularly in the areas of renewable energy, carbon reduction, and sustainable urban development.

The gathering concluded with the ministers agreeing to strengthen coordination among GCC member states in implementing environmental policies and initiatives that align with regional and international standards. The participants also praised Kuwait for hosting the meeting and its ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability across the Gulf region. Qatar’s active participation in the meeting reflects its dedication to advancing joint GCC environmental goals and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for the region, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
