Qatar took part in the Ministerial Meeting for Key Partners in Support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), held on the margins of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Her Excellency Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater, Minister of State for International Cooperation, represented Qatar at the event, where she announced Qatar’s pledge of an additional $100 million in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The funds are intended to support UNRWA’s ongoing efforts in providing critical assistance to Palestinian refugees.
In her address, Al Khater emphasized the importance of a unified stance from the international community to support UNRWA, especially in light of systematic challenges posed by the Israeli government. She underscored Qatar’s pride in being one of the first countries to sign the Statement of Shared Commitments on UNRWA, reaffirming the agency’s crucial role in delivering life-saving aid to the Palestinian population.
Al Khater also expressed Qatar’s strong opposition to attempts to designate UNRWA as a terrorist organization, warning that such efforts could lead to widespread negative consequences. Qatar has consistently increased its contributions to UNRWA, becoming the first Arab country to sign a multi-year agreement with the agency in 2018.
Al Khater highlighted Qatar’s ongoing coordination with UNRWA to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian refugees and provide essential humanitarian assistance. She noted the importance of this year’s meeting, given the escalation of Israeli aggression in Gaza, military operations in the West Bank, and recent attacks on Lebanon, all of which have exacerbated humanitarian crises in the region. Qatar remains committed to standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and supporting their urgent humanitarian needs.
