The Saudi Embassy in London has confirmed it is actively coordinating with British authorities following the tragic death of a young Saudi citizen, Mohammed Al-Qasim, who was fatally stabbed in Cambridge, England. The 20-year-old, who had come to the UK for a short-term language course, was the victim of what police have described as an “unprovoked attack.”
The incident occurred shortly before midnight on August 1 in the Mill Park area of Cambridge. Emergency services responding to reports of violence found Al-Qasim with serious injuries. Despite attempts to save him, he died at the scene. Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that a post-mortem examination is scheduled for August 5 to determine the exact cause of death.
On August 4, authorities charged 21-year-old Chas Corrigan of Cambridge with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. He appeared before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court and has been remanded in custody until his next hearing at Cambridge Crown Court on August 6. Additionally, a 50-year-old man from the same city was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in custody as investigations continue.
Cambridgeshire Police stated that Al-Qasim’s killing appears to have been an unprovoked act of violence. The young Saudi student was in the city for a 10-week English language program, pursuing his studies with enthusiasm and purpose. His sudden and violent death has sparked shock both in the local community and abroad.
In a statement issued on August 4, the Saudi Embassy expressed its deep condolences and assured that it was committed to discovering the full circumstances of the incident. “The embassy is following up on an assault on a Saudi citizen that led to his death, and continues to liaise with UK agencies,” the statement read. It also confirmed that efforts are underway to repatriate Al-Qasim’s body to Saudi Arabia for burial. “The embassy and all its staff extend their sincere condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased,” it added.
The tragedy has deeply affected Al-Qasim’s family, who described him as a beacon of light in their lives. In a heartfelt tribute, his family said: “He was a young man brimming with enthusiasm, chivalry, and courage. A dutiful son, a loving brother, and the spiritual leader of the family. His presence lit up every gathering, and his loss has left a void that cannot be filled.”
They further recalled his kindness and supportiveness, noting that he was “his father’s support, his mother’s comfort, his sisters’ best friend, and the helping hand to his uncles.” His compassionate and generous nature earned him the love and respect of all who knew him.
As the investigation continues, the Saudi and British authorities remain in close communication to ensure justice is served. Al-Qasim’s death serves as a painful reminder of the need for safety and protection for all international students abroad, and his memory lives on through the love and admiration of those he left behind.
