The recent controversy surrounding Indian citizens being deported from the United States in handcuffs has once again raised serious questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy and his much-touted image as a “world guru.” Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s sharp criticism, “The Indians were brought here as captives from America… It is so shameful that they were being handcuffed and sent back to India” highlights the growing discontent over Modi’s governance and its impact on India’s global standing.

One of the key responsibilities of any government is to protect the dignity and rights of its citizens, whether at home or abroad. However, under Modi’s leadership, there has been a growing trend of Indian migrants facing humiliation in foreign lands. The sight of Indians being forcibly deported, treated as criminals, and handcuffed while returning to their own country is an international disgrace. Rather than establishing India as a respected global power, Modi’s policies have led to a situation where Indians are being treated like second-class citizens on the world stage.

Since coming to power, Modi has repeatedly claimed that India is on its way to becoming a “Vishwaguru” (world guru), leading the world in economic progress, diplomacy, and global influence. However, the reality is far from his lofty claims. While Modi boasts of strengthening India’s position internationally, incidents like these expose the truth: under his leadership, India is witnessing diplomatic failures that are causing embarrassment rather than pride. A true global leader would ensure that Indians abroad are treated with dignity, not dragged home in chains.

A major reason why so many Indians are desperately seeking opportunities abroad—even through illegal means is the worsening economic condition in the country. Under Modi’s rule, unemployment has reached alarming levels, forcing young Indians to leave in search of better livelihoods. Instead of creating job opportunities in India, Modi’s government has failed to address this crisis, pushing people towards migration at any cost. This deportation incident is a direct consequence of the government’s failure to provide economic stability and a future for its citizens.

Akhilesh Yadav’s statement should serve as a wake-up call. India cannot afford to blindly accept Modi’s rhetoric when the reality is starkly different. If Modi truly wants to make India a global leader, he must first ensure that Indians abroad are respected and that the country’s youth have opportunities at home. Otherwise, his dream of becoming a “world guru” will remain just another empty promise.
