The Sultanate of Oman has achieved a remarkable milestone, being honoured with the prestigious “Shokumon” Award by the University of Tokyo, one of Japan’s most respected academic institutions. This distinction celebrates Oman’s enduring commitment to fostering academic research and promoting cultural understanding, particularly in the field of Middle Eastern studies. The award ceremony, held in Tokyo, saw Dr. Mohammed bin Said Al Busaidi, Oman’s Ambassador to Japan, accept the honour on behalf of the Omani government.
The recognition highlights the deep and evolving partnership between Oman and Japan in the realms of education, culture, and intellectual exchange. At the heart of this achievement lies the Sultan Qaboos Chair for Middle Eastern Studies, established at the University of Tokyo in 2011. Over the years, this academic chair has become a cornerstone of research and dialogue, enriching the university’s understanding of the Arab world while serving as a bridge between Omani scholarship and Japanese academia.
It has supported research, academic publications, and student exchange initiatives that bring fresh perspectives to the study of the Middle East. The Shokumon Award is the highest distinction granted by the University of Tokyo to institutions and individuals whose work has made outstanding contributions to its academic mission. By awarding this honour to the Government of Oman, the university not only acknowledges Oman’s support for academic excellence but also celebrates the nation’s role in promoting cultural diplomacy through knowledge and learning.
This recognition is historic, it marks the first time in the award’s history that an Arab government has received this prestigious honour. It symbolizes Oman’s leadership in advancing dialogue between civilizations, nurturing mutual understanding, and championing education as a path to peace and progress. The University of Tokyo’s tribute stands as a testament to Oman’s vision under its wise leadership, which continues to invest in intellectual growth and global partnerships. By strengthening academic ties and promoting shared knowledge, the Sultanate reaffirms its role as a beacon of cultural and educational collaboration between the Arab world and Asia.
