Sheikh Tamim’s Africa visit strengthens bilateral ties and reinforces Qatar’s role in regional peace

His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, arrived in the friendly Republic of South Africa to participate in the G20 Summit 2025, scheduled to be held in Johannesburg. His Highness was received at Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment of the Republic of South Africa, HE Willem Abraham Stephanus Aucamp; Qatar’s Ambassador to South Africa, HE Mubarak bin Nasser Al Khalifa, along with members of the Qatari Embassy in Pretoria. His Highness is accompanied by an official delegation attending the high-level summit.

Before arriving in South Africa, His Highness the Amir and President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), HE Felix Tshisekedi, held an official session of talks at the Presidential Office in Kinshasa. President Tshisekedi warmly welcomed His Highness and the accompanying delegation, expressing his pleasure at hosting the Amir for the first time. He emphasized that the visit marks an important step toward deepening bilateral cooperation in various sectors, strengthening relations between the two nations.

The DRC President extended his gratitude to Qatar for its role in supporting peace efforts in the region, particularly highlighting the Doha Framework Agreement for Peace between the DRC Government and the Congo River Alliance “March 23 Movement.” He described the agreement as a significant milestone that contributes to advancing reconciliation, restoring stability, and easing the humanitarian suffering of displaced communities. For his part, His Highness the Amir expressed appreciation for the warm reception, affirming the steady progress in relations between Qatar and the DRC. He reiterated Qatar’s determination to expand cooperation across all fields in a way that promotes the mutual interests of both friendly countries.

His Highness also expressed gratitude for the DRC’s confidence in Qatar’s mediation efforts, voicing hope that the peace agreement will successfully fulfill its objectives. He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to supporting peace both regionally and globally. During the talks, both leaders reviewed areas of bilateral cooperation, focusing in particular on economic and investment partnerships. They also exchanged views on key regional and international issues.

The session was attended by senior officials from both sides, including HE Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khulaifi, Chief of the Amiri Diwan; HE Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and HE Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Sayed, Minister of State for Foreign Trade. From the DRC side, several ministers and senior officials were present. Following the talks, President Tshisekedi hosted a luncheon banquet in honor of His Highness the Amir and the accompanying delegation, marking a warm conclusion to the visit.
