BY MOHAMMAD TARIQUE SALEEM

The INDIA bloc’s massive gathering at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on 1 November 2026 marked a significant moment of opposition consolidation under the banner of Vote Bachao Desh Bachao. Leaders from across the alliance including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, Tejashwi Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav projected a rare public display of unity by arriving together in open vehicles and addressing a packed venue that organisers claimed drew supporters from multiple states. The core demand remained the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an end to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls which the opposition has labelled a systematic exercise in voter exclusion.

Rahul Gandhi’s address reinforced and expanded these charges on a national scale. He alleged that vote theft through EVMs and deliberate additions and deletions in electoral rolls had taken place in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Claiming that roughly 13.5 crore voters or about fifteen percent of the electorate had been removed after the 2024 polls he described the last general election as illegal and stolen. He termed the alleged deletion of names an anti national act and treason calling it the rarest of rare cases because it amounted to the theft of every citizen’s voice and freedom of expression.

Gandhi declared from the stage that Gyanesh Kumar would be removed from the post of Chief Election Commissioner and would go to jail. He asserted that without Kumar neither Narendra Modi would have become Prime Minister nor Amit Shah Home Minister. Responding directly to the Home Minister’s claim that the Prime Minister was not going anywhere Gandhi stated the opposite: the Opposition would not allow Modi to escape and after dealing with the CEC it would turn its attention to both Modi and Shah with legal action to follow. He framed the rally not as the voice of politicians but as the collective message of farmers youth workers and ordinary citizens determined to prevent the destruction of the Constitution.

Gandhi further sketched the kind of India the Opposition sought to restore. Invoking the image of Shiv ki Barat where every living being can join without restriction he said a hardworking farmer must be allowed to reap the rewards of labour and a student who studies for eighteen hours must find employment. He rejected a country controlled by two or three individuals and specifically criticised the concentration of education health and other sectors in the hands of a few industrialists. While stating that he harboured no personal hatred for Modi Shah or Kumar he accused them of attacking the soul of the nation.

Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav used the platform to deliver one of the sharpest attacks of the day. He focused relentlessly on Uttar Pradesh where he argued the BJP has crossed every limit of injustice. Pointing to the recent Legislative Council elections in Varanasi he declared that the double engine government had been reduced to double zero. The BJP candidate lost once the result was rejected and a recount was forced through the Election Commission yet the party still lost. According to Yadav this sequence exposed both electoral desperation and institutional collusion.

He then turned to the Chief Minister’s own recent statements. After the Varanasi defeat Yogi Adityanath began speaking of 1.27 crore Hindu votes having been deleted from the rolls. Yadav calculated that the figure averages roughly thirty one thousand votes per assembly constituency across Uttar Pradesh’s four hundred three seats. He asked where the Chief Minister obtained the precise number and why the admission surfaced only after electoral setbacks. In Yadav’s reading the BJP is already preparing alibis for an expected defeat in 2027 by shifting blame onto the very machinery it once controlled.

The speech repeatedly returned to the theme of vote theft as an organised continuum rather than isolated incidents. Yadav recalled the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections when Samajwadi Party workers and PDA activists identified thousands of voters who had cast ballots in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls yet found their names missing in 2022. Affidavits were submitted to the Election Commission but no action followed. He described the Commission at that time as having swallowed a sleeping pill. Similar patterns he claimed were visible in the Rampur by election where force was allegedly used to prevent voting and in West Bengal where large scale deletions preceded the assembly contest.

The message was clear: the opposition will no longer treat these episodes as separate local failures. Yadav also invoked cultural and religious symbolism to broaden the indictment. He accused the ruling party of having allowed chanda chori and chadawa chori at the Ram temple in Ayodhya and warned that those who steal the wealth of Lord Ram face not merely destruction but complete annihilation. The line was designed to undercut the BJP’s claim to sole ownership of Hindu sentiment while simultaneously casting the party as morally compromised even on its most celebrated project.

By framing Ramlila Maidan as the Haldighati of democracy Yadav sought to position the gathering as a historic inflection point rather than a routine protest. He told the crowd that Uttar Pradesh has already begun the process of change and that the 2027 assembly election will deliver a final farewell from which the BJP will never return. The prediction was not presented as speculation but as the logical outcome of accumulated public anger over voter list manipulation administrative high handedness and the suppression of youth protests in the capital.

The larger political context of the rally amplified these charges. The visible coordination among parties that have often competed for the same social bases was carefully staged. The presence of Mamata Banerjee beside Akhilesh Yadav and the joint procession led by Rahul Gandhi signalled an attempt to present a single opposition front on the question of electoral integrity. Whether this unity can be sustained beyond a single high visibility rally remains an open question yet the optics of collective leadership arriving together and speaking from the same stage were designed for national consumption.

For the ruling party the challenge is dual. It must defend the integrity of the Special Intensive Revision exercise while simultaneously explaining why its own leaders in Uttar Pradesh are now citing large scale deletions as a grievance. For the opposition the task is to convert a successful mobilisation in Delhi into sustained organisational work at the booth level especially in Uttar Pradesh where the next major electoral test will occur. Akhilesh Yadav’s speech made that connection explicit by tying every national allegation back to the arithmetic of thirty one thousand missing votes per constituency while Rahul Gandhi elevated the same issue into a constitutional crisis affecting the entire republic.

In the end the Ramlila Ground gathering functioned as both protest and political theatre. It allowed the INDIA bloc to claim the moral high ground on the defence of the franchise while giving its principal regional leaders a national stage on which to rehearse their strongest local narratives. Whether the energy generated on 1 November can be converted into electoral currency will be tested first in the by elections and local body contests that precede the 2027 assembly battle and ultimately in the assembly election itself. For now the opposition has succeeded in placing the integrity of the voter list at the centre of the national conversation.

The leaders who shared the stage and participated in the procession included Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, Tejashwi Yadav, Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Abhishek Banerjee, Supriya Sule, MA Baby, D Raja, Dipankar Bhattacharya, KC Venugopal and representatives from nearly two dozen parties of the INDIA alliance.
