Muscat: Oman has taken another significant step toward building a more inclusive society with the launch of the first edition of its national Purple Saturday on July 25, initiative, held under the inspiring slogan, “One Day, A Lasting Impact.” The campaign is designed to promote accessibility, encourage social participation, and create a more welcoming shopping experience for persons with disabilities across the Sultanate.

The nationwide initiative is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Running from July 23 to August 1, 2026, the campaign encourages commercial establishments throughout the country to provide exclusive promotions and discounts for persons with disabilities while also improving the accessibility of their facilities and services.

More than just a shopping campaign, Purple Saturday sends a powerful message about equality and inclusion. Officials say the initiative aims to inspire businesses to look beyond temporary discounts and adopt long-term measures that make their environments accessible and welcoming to everyone. Accessibility, they emphasize, is not limited to installing ramps or reserving parking spaces. It also involves designing entrances, customer service, communication methods, and facilities that enable people with disabilities to participate independently and confidently.

The Ministry of Social Development highlighted that every person experiences public spaces differently, and small but meaningful improvements can greatly enhance everyday life. Features such as barrier-free entrances, accessible restrooms, clear signage, and employees trained to communicate effectively with persons with disabilities can transform ordinary shopping trips into positive and empowering experiences.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion described Purple Saturday as an opportunity for businesses to demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility. By combining promotional offers with accessible services, companies can strengthen customer relationships while contributing to a more inclusive society where every individual feels valued and respected.

Supporting the initiative is the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), which reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that transportation systems, communication networks, and digital platforms are accessible to persons with disabilities. The ministry stressed that equal access to technology and public services is essential for enabling full participation in modern society.

Purple Saturday reflects Oman’s broader vision of building an inclusive nation where government institutions and the private sector work hand in hand to remove barriers and expand opportunities for all citizens. By encouraging businesses to embrace accessibility as a lasting commitment rather than a one-day event, the initiative seeks to create meaningful social change. Ultimately, Purple Saturday is not just about shopping, it is about fostering dignity, equality, and a stronger sense of belonging for persons with disabilities throughout Oman.
