The Samajwadi Party (SP) has strongly opposed the proposed demolition of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, describing the move as an attack on education and the constitutional rights of students. Acting on the directions of SP National President Akhilesh Yadav, a high-level party delegation led by Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Mata Prasad Pandey visited Rampur and submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, urging the administration to immediately halt any demolition proceedings.
The memorandum emphasized that preserving the university is essential for safeguarding the future of thousands of students, particularly those from economically weaker sections, backward communities, Scheduled Castes, minorities, and other marginalized groups. The party stated that education is a fundamental pillar of social progress and reiterated its commitment to defending students’ interests and constitutional values through democratic means.
Addressing the media, Mata Prasad Pandey said that demolishing an educational institution would be contrary to the constitutional spirit of the Right to Education and would undermine India’s academic infrastructure. He described the demolition order as an anti-people decision and appealed to the government to reconsider its stand. The delegation included several MLAs, former legislators, district presidents, and senior Samajwadi Party leaders from across Uttar Pradesh, demonstrating the party’s unified position on the issue.
SP National President and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp attack on the BJP government, accusing it of pursuing politics of revenge. He alleged that history has never viewed those who destroy universities as protectors of society and claimed that the Uttar Pradesh government was creating a negative legacy by targeting educational institutions.
Yadav further stated that the BJP government has consistently neglected education, employment, and opportunities for young people. Referring to the ongoing concerns over examination irregularities, including paper leaks, he alleged that both the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government had failed to protect students’ futures. He demanded accountability over examination-related controversies and reiterated his party’s support for students protesting against alleged administrative failures.
Expressing solidarity with the campaign to save Jauhar University, Yadav described every university as a “temple of education” and appealed to people across the country to support efforts to protect educational institutions from political disputes. He also criticized the government’s handling of student demonstrations, alleging excessive police action and calling for an impartial investigation into reports of violence during protests.
Separately, Akhilesh Yadav expressed profound grief over the demise of senior Samajwadi Party leader and five-time MLA from Nizamabad in Azamgarh, Alam Badi, aged 90. Paying tribute, Yadav remembered him as an honest, simple, and dedicated public servant whose passing marks an irreparable loss for the party. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
