In a renewed push to protect the country’s energy and water resources, Kuwait’s Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, officially launched the fourth edition of the National Energy Saving Campaign under the slogan “Save… and Make a Difference.” Speaking during the inauguration ceremony at the Government Communication Center on May 11, the minister stressed that conserving electricity and water is no longer just an option but a national responsibility. He called on citizens, residents, and institutions to work together to preserve Kuwait’s vital resources and strengthen the country’s long-term sustainability.
Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem described the campaign as a partnership between the government and society, aimed at building a stronger culture of responsible consumption while safeguarding Kuwait’s electricity and water security. The minister also highlighted the growing challenges facing the sector. He revealed that recent attacks targeting ministry infrastructure caused major damage to power generation and water desalination facilities. The incidents forced several generating units and fuel storage facilities out of service temporarily, while also delaying maintenance operations.
Despite these difficulties, he praised ministry engineers and technical teams for continuing to work tirelessly around the clock to maintain stable electricity supplies across the country. On the development front, the minister announced progress on several major energy projects designed to meet Kuwait’s future demand. Contracts have been signed for the second and third phases of the Al-Zour Power Plant, which is expected to generate 2,700 megawatts of electricity and produce 120 million imperial gallons of water daily.
He further disclosed that the winning company for the first phase of the Shagaya Solar Power Project, with a planned capacity of 1,100 megawatts, will be announced in June. Additional tenders for the second phase of Shagaya and the first phase of the Al-Khiran Power Plant are also nearing completion. Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem emphasized that energy conservation remains the “first line of defense” against increasing consumption levels that continue to place pressure on national infrastructure.
He urged the public to move beyond awareness campaigns and adopt real behavioral changes in daily electricity and water usage. Calling conservation a true reflection of patriotism and responsibility toward future generations, the minister encouraged every segment of society to actively participate in the campaign’s mission. The event also included presentations by engineer Khadija Boushehri and engineer Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim, who shared practical examples showing how smarter consumption habits can significantly reduce monthly utility bills.
