In a significant step toward empowering women across the Gulf region, Kuwait has announced the launch of the “Kuwait Award for Women’s Excellence: Status and Empowerment” under the patronage of His Highness Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad AlSabah. The initiative, unveiled ahead of Kuwaiti Women’s Day on May 16, reflects the country’s growing commitment to recognizing and supporting the achievements of women in all sectors of society. The announcement was made during a press conference in Kuwait City by Dr. Amthal AlHuwayla, who described the award as more than just a recognition program.
Dr. AlHuwayla said, the initiative is designed to inspire future generations by sharing the experiences, creativity, and leadership journeys of successful women from across the Gulf. Dr. AlHuwayla said the award reflects Kuwait’s belief that women are not only contributors to society, but also key partners in shaping the future and driving sustainable development. She noted that the initiative is closely aligned with Kuwait Vision 2035, which aims to build a more progressive and diversified nation where women play a central role in growth and innovation.
The award will be organized every two years on May 16 and will initially focus on Gulf women as part of a pilot phase before expanding internationally in the future. The minister explained that the goal is not simply to celebrate success stories, but to create meaningful opportunities for women to influence society through mentorship, innovation, and leadership programs. Several categories will be included in the award, covering achievements in government institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations, and individual accomplishments.
Winners will also receive support through practical empowerment initiatives aimed at helping them continue their contributions to society. As part of the project, Kuwait also plans to launch an online platform dedicated to women’s initiatives and create a database of talented women to support decision-makers and connect participants with institutions that can help develop their ideas and projects. Dr. AlHuwayla further revealed that a high-level committee involving various national entities will soon be formed to oversee the organization and evaluation process of the award.
The Ministry of Social Affairs will supervise the coordination and implementation of the initiative. During press conference, the minister stressed that the Prime Minister’s patronage of the award sends a powerful message about the leadership’s confidence in women and their important role in creating positive change within society. According to Kuwait News Agency, the announcement was officially made during a press conference held on May 14 in Kuwait.
