In the demanding world of modern healthcare, where efficient administration is as critical as medical expertise, Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Harsvardhan has emerged as one of Uttar Pradesh’s most respected healthcare administrators. Combining academic brilliance with visionary leadership, he has devoted his career to improving patient care, strengthening healthcare systems, and advancing medical education.
Currently, Prof. Harsvardhan is serving as the Medical Superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, one of India’s premier medical institutions. In addition to this responsibility, he is a senior faculty member in the Department of Hospital Administration, Additional Medical Superintendent of the Apex Trauma Centre, and Sub Dean (Quality). Through these roles, he has been instrumental in enhancing healthcare delivery, improving hospital management practices, and promoting quality standards that directly benefit patients.
His commitment to excellence has earned him recognition from several prestigious institutions. Among his most notable honours is the Health Excellence Award, presented by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the healthcare sector. His work has also been acknowledged by the Governments of India, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, along with numerous professional organisations that have celebrated his achievements in hospital administration and public health.
Born to Dr. Ramesh Chandra Dwivedi and Smt. Shanti Dwivedi, Prof. Harsvardhan’s journey has been defined by academic excellence from the very beginning. He graduated as an MBBS topper before pursuing an MD in Hospital Administration from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, one of India’s most prestigious medical institutions. Driven by an enduring passion for learning, he went on to earn an impressive range of qualifications, including DNB, MPH, LLB, PhD, MNAMS, DMLE, DGM, and PGDHA, reflecting his multidisciplinary approach to healthcare leadership.
His contributions extend far beyond SGPGIMS. As the Joint Director of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO-UP) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Associate Director of the Uttar Pradesh Centre for Research and Medical Education (UPCRAM), he has played an important role in promoting organ donation, advancing medical research, and improving healthcare governance across the state.
Before joining SGPGIMS, Prof. Harsvardhan served as the Medical Superintendent and Executive Registrar of the Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute, where he contributed significantly to institutional development and patient care.He also serves as Chairman of the Indian Academy of Mind Body Medicine, reflecting his belief in a holistic approach to health and well-being. Beyond hospitals and classrooms, Prof. Harsvardhan is equally passionate about literature. A thoughtful writer and poet, he regularly writes on contemporary issues and has authored several books and book chapters.
With nearly 100 scientific research papers to his credit, he continues to contribute meaningfully to medical scholarship while inspiring young healthcare professionals through both research and education. Whether leading healthcare institutions, promoting organ donation, mentoring future administrators, or expressing ideas through literature, Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Harsvardhan exemplifies a rare blend of administrative acumen, academic excellence, and social commitment.
