Malaysia is awaiting further details from Saudi Arabian authorities after reports emerged that five Malaysians were detained for allegedly attempting to enter Mecca without valid haj permits during this year’s pilgrimage season. The issue has drawn attention as millions of Muslims from around the world gather in Saudi Arabia for haj, one of the largest annual religious gatherings globally. Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan, said the government is still waiting for the outcome of the Saudi investigation before making any further comments.
“We are still waiting for the investigation,” he told reporters after attending the 2026 Grand Haj Symposium on May 20. According to reports published by a Saudi Arabian news portal, the five Malaysians were allegedly caught trying to enter Mecca through hilly desert routes without official haj permits. Saudi authorities have tightened restrictions around the holy city during the pilgrimage season to control the massive flow of pilgrims and ensure safety. The Saudi Arabian General Directorate of Mujahideen reportedly detained the individuals for violating regulations set for the 1447H haj season before initiating legal procedures against them.
Every year, Saudi Arabia implements strict permit systems for haj pilgrims, allowing only registered worshippers to enter Mecca during the pilgrimage period. Officials say the rules are essential to avoid overcrowding and to protect the safety of millions of pilgrims performing religious rituals in extreme summer conditions. Saudi authorities have repeatedly warned against unauthorized entry into pilgrimage zones, stressing that violations could endanger both individuals and the wider haj operation.
The incident has sparked concern in Malaysia, where thousands of citizens travel annually to perform haj through officially approved arrangements. However, Malaysian authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of those detained or whether consular assistance has been extended. Saudi officials also reminded pilgrims and residents to follow all haj regulations and procedures to help ensure a smooth, safe, and orderly pilgrimage season for everyone involved.
