U.S. President Donald Trump recently praised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, describing him as a “great leader” and a close friend, while expressing confidence that tensions between Türkiye and Israel would not escalate into a direct confrontation. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump was asked about the possibility of a conflict between Türkiye and Israel amid growing regional instability and increasingly sharp rhetoric exchanged by leaders from both countries.
The question followed a series of social media remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed at Erdoğan, as well as Ankara’s continued criticism of Israeli policies in the region. Trump dismissed concerns about a potential clash, saying he had not heard of any credible indications that such a scenario was developing. He emphasized his personal relationship with Erdoğan and suggested that direct communication between the two leaders could help prevent misunderstandings.
“He’s a very good friend of mine, and we’ve worked very well together,” Trump said. “I like him. He’s a great leader and a very strong person.” The U.S. president added that if he became aware of any serious tensions, he would personally reach out to Erdoğan. “If I heard something like that, I would call him and make sure everything was fine,” Trump said. “I don’t think something like that will happen with Türkiye. He respects me, and I respect him. Beyond that, we have a good friendship.”
Trump’s comments highlighted the longstanding rapport between the two leaders, who have maintained communication over a range of regional and international issues despite occasional disagreements between Washington and Ankara. Their relationship has often been characterized by direct engagement, particularly during periods of geopolitical uncertainty. The remarks come at a time when Türkiye remains one of Israel’s most vocal critics in the region.
Ankara has consistently condemned Israel’s military actions in Gaza and has warned against what it describes as expansionist policies that threaten broader regional stability. President Erdoğan has repeatedly called on the international community to take stronger action to halt the violence and pursue a diplomatic resolution to the Palestinian issue. Türkiye has positioned itself as a leading advocate for Palestinian rights and has sought to mobilize international support for a ceasefire and renewed peace efforts.
Turkish officials argue that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through diplomacy, respect for international law, and the establishment of a viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Against this backdrop, Trump’s remarks suggest Washington sees continued dialogue with Ankara as an important factor in managing tensions and maintaining regional stability.
