Samajwadi Party (SP) National President and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of attempting to discredit protesting youth while simultaneously distancing itself from those allegedly acting in its favor. Addressing a press conference, Yadav also announced that the Samajwadi Party would observe July 26 as “Constitution Pillar Foundation Day” across Uttar Pradesh and the country, emphasizing the importance of protecting the Constitution and the reservation system.
Yadav alleged that the BJP and its supporters were trying to infiltrate protest movements to portray young demonstrators in a negative light. He claimed that while some individuals were allegedly working in favor of the ruling party, they became uncomfortable when labeled as BJP supporters. The SP c hief asserted that many people who had once openly displayed their support for the BJP were now distancing themselves from the party. According to him, public dissatisfaction has grown due to a series of controversies, including alleged misconduct in Ayodhya, police action against protesters, handling of youth movements, and the treatment of victims in various incidents.
He claimed these developments had damaged the party’s public image. Continuing his criticism, Yadav said that even the BJP’s “paid and unpaid supporters” were finding it increasingly difficult to defend the party’s policies and actions. He alleged that many of the ruling party’s supporters had spent the past decade defending the government but were now facing public criticism and embarrassment due to what he described as repeated failures in governance.
He accused the BJP of weakening democratic institutions, misusing government agencies, encouraging corruption, failing to control inflation, mishandling recruitment and examination processes, and neglecting employment opportunities for young people. Yadav also alleged that the government had misused bulldozer actions and encounter policies, targeted opposition leaders through false cases, and attempted to undermine constitutional values and social justice. Describing the present political environment, Yadav remarked that what the BJP called an “era of progress” had instead become a period of public embarrassment for many of its own supporters.
Announcing the observance of “Constitution Pillar Foundation Day” on July 26, Yadav said the date carries historic significance because it marks the implementation of reservation in the erstwhile Kolhapur State by Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, inspired by the vision of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. He said this initiative later became the foundation for constitutional provisions safeguarding social justice through the efforts of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. According to Yadav, Constitution Pillar Foundation Day symbolizes the commitment to social justice, equality, and the protection of constitutional rights.
He said that Samajwadi Party offices across Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country would organize simple ceremonies in the presence of copies of the Constitution to reaffirm their commitment to these ideals. He stressed that the Constitution remains the strongest safeguard for reservation, equality, and democratic values, adding that protecting the Constitution is essential to preserving social justice and equal opportunities.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Speaking to the media in Parliament, she said students, youth, and opposition parties were seeking accountability and a comprehensive discussion on the issue. Dimple Yadav alleged that the examination system required urgent reforms and claimed that numerous paper leaks had occurred during the BJP government’s tenure. She criticized the police action against protesting students at Jantar Mantar, alleging excessive force and mistreatment of demonstrators.
Holding the Central Government accountable, she also called for responsibility to be fixed for the alleged actions of the Delhi Police, which functions under the Union Home Ministry. She further alleged that the BJP government was unwilling to address the concerns of students, youth, and farmers, and argued that the country’s young people were demanding accountability, transparency, and justice. According to her, only a thorough investigation and political responsibility would restore public confidence in the examination system.
