BY MOHAMMAD TARIQUE SALEEM

With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections drawing closer, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has launched an all-out offensive that signals he is leaving nothing to chance. From hyper-local planning and booth-level fortification to social engineering and relentless attacks on the Yogi Adityanath government, the former chief minister is methodically building a war machine aimed at reclaiming power.

At the heart of his strategy is a precise numbers game. Yadav has directed party workers to increase the SP’s vote tally by 27,000 in targeted constituencies, effectively aiming to slash the BJP’s margin by the same number. The logic is rooted in the 2022 results, where the BJP’s victory margins in dozens of seats were under 27,000. Workers have been told to go door-to-door, listen to grievances, and convert discontent into votes. This is not vague campaigning; it is surgical.

Complementing this is a radical shift to hyper-local politics. The party is preparing 75 district-specific manifestos alongside a state-level one. Functionaries have been tasked with identifying five key local problems in every district, stalled projects, employment gaps, irrigation needs, healthcare shortages, and tourism potential, so that promises feel relevant rather than generic. The state manifesto, to be released on Constitution Day (November 26) as a “PDA Pledge Paper,” will centre on the backward classes, Dalits and minorities, the social coalition that delivered SP 37 Lok Sabha seats in 2024.

The PDA formula itself is being upgraded. Yadav is pushing to field over 100 Dalit candidates, including on general seats, a sharp expansion from 2022. Non-Yadav OBCs and smaller communities in western UP and Rohilkhand are being actively courted. Recent inductions of leaders from other parties are being projected as proof that both eastern and western UP are shifting. Booth-level organisation is being tightened, with strict instructions to monitor voter lists and prevent alleged deletions or bogus entries, issues Yadav repeatedly flags as systemic attempts to tilt the playing field.

Alliance management remains central. While seat-sharing talks with the Congress continue and differences over numbers persist, Yadav has repeatedly affirmed that the partnership which dented the BJP in 2024 will continue. The message is clear: defeating the ruling party matters more than individual seat tallies.

On the offensive front, Yadav has not softened his rhetoric. He accuses the BJP government of failing on jobs, farmers’ incomes, inflation and healthcare, of using bulldozers as political tools, of damaging Ambedkar statues, and of treating the Constitution with contempt. Campaign vehicles have been flagged off, leaders are being mobilised, and the narrative of “saving democracy and social justice” is being hammered home at every opportunity.

Whether these carefully calibrated moves will translate into a majority remains to be tested at the ballot box. What is already evident is that Akhilesh Yadav is not waiting for the election calendar to dictate the pace. He is treating 2027 as a do-or-die contest and preparing for it with the intensity of a leader who believes the ground is finally shifting. For the BJP, the challenge is no longer just governance; it is a determined opponent who has studied every weak spot and is systematically trying to exploit it.
