Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of burdening people with higher electricity charges to finance its political activities ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He termed the alleged increase in electricity bills as an “election surcharge” and claimed that consumers would face a financial shock when they receive their bills from June onwards.
In a statement, Yadav alleged that the rise in electricity charges has little to do with improving services and more to do with generating funds for the ruling party. He said that people would feel the impact of the increase immediately, adding that soaring utility costs are further worsening the financial strain already caused by inflation.
The Samajwadi Party chief criticized the BJP government for what he described as a continuous rise in the cost of living. According to him, inflation has already reached alarming levels, yet the government continues to impose additional burdens on ordinary citizens. He argued that households across the state are struggling to manage expenses while prices of essential goods and services continue to rise.
Yadav also accused the government of repeatedly increasing the prices of diesel, petrol, electricity and cooking gas cylinders. He said these decisions have left common people helpless and frustrated. Referring to the BJP’s election promises, he claimed that there is a significant gap between the party’s commitments and its actions in power. The BJP had promised to control inflation, he said, but rising prices have instead become a defining feature of its governance.
Taking aim at the government’s economic policies, Yadav alleged that they are designed to benefit large corporate interests rather than ordinary citizens. He claimed that wealth is being transferred from the pockets of the poor to affluent industrialists, while the government maintains close ties with influential business groups. He further alleged that the ruling party ultimately benefits through commissions and political donations.
The former chief minister described the BJP as anti-poor and anti-farmer, asserting that its policies have failed to address the concerns of vulnerable sections of society. Looking ahead to the 2027 Assembly elections, Yadav expressed confidence that the people of Uttar Pradesh would support the Samajwadi Party and bring it back to power. He maintained that a change in government would be necessary to provide relief from inflation and reduce the economic hardships being faced by citizens across the state.
