BY ZAHID AKHTAR

In a remarkable tale of grit, talent, and community service, Rukhsar Hasan Askari, an Indian-origin woman raised in the historic city of Lucknow, has etched her name in the annals of British politics. Winning the councillor elections from London’s Sutton Ward seat, Rukhsar not only brought immense pride to her family but also to Lucknow and India at large. Her landslide victory, securing 1,593 votes against runner-up Greg Peter’s 448 from the Green Party, signals a powerful endorsement of her vision and dedication.

Born and bred in Lucknow, Rukhsar completed her intermediate education at the esteemed La Martiniere College, topping her class with outstanding marks. Academics were just the beginning; she shone in sports, clinching accolades in swimming competitions that highlighted her all-round prowess. Tragedy struck early when she lost her father young, but resilience defined her path. Raised primarily at her maternal grandparents’ home in Kashmiri Mohalla’s Dargah area, she drew inspiration from her grandfather, the late Mirza Jalaluddin Haider, a revered social worker and polytechnic teacher whose legacy of service shaped her ethos.

“Rukhsar was always a bright, hardworking student,” recalls her uncle, Dr. S. H. Rizvi, who watched her evolve from a promising Lucknowite to a global achiever. About 13 years ago, she ventured to London for higher studies, emerging as a qualified barrister. Today, she thrives at a reputed law firm, blending legal expertise with a passion for public good. Her political journey ignited just one-and-a-half years ago. Urged by locals, Rukhsar joined the Liberal Democrats, diving headfirst into social work. She championed public issues with fervor, earning admiration across societal divides.

The party, recognizing her grassroots appeal, nominated her for Sutton Ward. What followed was a masterclass in campaigning: tireless door-to-door outreach, incisive policy advocacy, and an unyielding commitment to constituents. The results spoke volumes, a massive margin that underscored her trust dividend. This victory transcends borders. In Lucknow, jubilation erupted among family, relatives, and well-wishers. “It’s a proud moment for the city and the nation,” they echoed, celebrating Rukhsar as a beacon for the Indian diaspora.

Her story resonates deeply in an era of migration and ambition: a woman from Lucknow’s bustling lanes now shapes policy in one of Europe’s powerhouses. Rukhsar’s ascent embodies the immigrant dream, rooted in Indian values of service and education, yet boldly global. From   swimming pools in Lucknow to council chambers in London, she proves that true leadership knows no geography. As she steps into her role, Sutton’s residents gain a fierce advocate, while her homeland cheers a daughter who carries its spirit worldwide. Lucknow’s pride swells; India’s flag flies higher.
