Samajwadi Party national president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has once again taken aim at the BJP government, accusing it of avoiding accountability and ignoring the concerns of ordinary people. He said the BJP appears to have forgotten the basic meaning of democracy and has instead allowed power and money to dominate governance.

Yadav referred to a recent protest by schoolchildren in Hamirpur, where students approached the District Magistrate’s office over a road that had remained incomplete for years. For him, the incident was more than just a local protest. It showed what happens when people repeatedly approach the administration but receive no meaningful response.

He said the message from the children was clear: if the government does not go to the people and listen to them, people will eventually come directly to the government. Yadav argued that democracy cannot work through a top-down approach. Elected representatives and government officials, he said, must remember that they are there to serve the public. Power is meant for society, not society for power.

He described this as an important principle of Samajwadi politics. “If there is no public welfare, there should be no government,” Yadav said, stressing that the real test of any government is how it improves the lives of ordinary citizens. He also raised questions over the quality of several major projects in Uttar Pradesh and alleged widespread corruption under BJP rule. Citing examples, he mentioned waterlogging at Jewar Airport, potholes on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and problems involving water tanks constructed under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

He also referred to the reported theft of offerings at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and questioned why accountability had not been fixed. Yadav’s criticism extended to Parliament as well. Speaking to the media, he opposed the FCRA Bill and alleged that several government measures were disadvantageous to minorities. He also questioned the government’s proposed time limit for responding to issues raised in Parliament.

According to him, setting a deadline for a response does not automatically create accountability. A genuine answer must address the substance of the issue and must be followed by responsibility and corrective action. Yadav said the government seemed more interested in ending the parliamentary session than addressing serious questions. He argued that people are no longer satisfied with speeches and assurances. What they want, he said, are clear answers, transparency and action.
